History:

St. Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church (Thanlyin)

 

St. Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church and parish was started in the year 1914, with a compound measuring 5 acres. A small chapel was built to accommodate the small community of Catholics then working mostly in the oil refinery which gave importance to this town known previously as Syrian and now as Thanlyin.

 

 

The parish also has a convent with three Sisters (OSM) and some boarding children. The 2004 statistics shows that 1590 parishioners are staying in this parish. Most of them are Tamil people.
